Pebble Beach and Big Sur

Drove through lots of freeway traffic to get out of San Francisco. Phew! As we drove south and out of traffic we entered a low flat area that is used for growing vegetables. Everything that was currently planted seemed to be covered in plastic. Recognized Brussels sprouts, but another veggie that looked like thistles I wasn't sure of. Some kind of root veggie?

Got to Monterey Peninsula and drove 17 Mile Drive around the forested area that holds many homes and numerous golf courses. Gorgeous look out areas where we could see surf, cypress trees, houses and golf courses.

We stopped at Spanish Bay golf course. It was really beautiful, the interior of the club house was decorated in multicolored slate. The course was right along the ocean. Beautiful views!! Unfortunately, Don could not golf as they were booked with a tournament. We checked out the pro shop where Don bought a hat. Also, took some pictures of the first tee off.

Drove further along 17 Mile Drive and took pictures of the various golf courses and some of the Monterey Cypress trees. The trees are native to this area and are some of the oldest in existence. Each tree has an individual personality derived from the unique gnarly branches. The Pebble Beach logo uses a single gnarly cypress tree on a lone rock. We photographed that specific tree too!

Our last stop on 17 Mile Drive was the Pebble Beach Golf Course. We checked out the pro shop and then had lunch at the Cafe. Pebble Beach was created in 1919. The club and restaurant are unpretentious considering how famous the course is. Don posed on the first tee. He would have loved to golf there. Maybe another time.

After our golfing tour we drove south on the coastal highway through Big Sur. Definitely the steepest cliffs of the drive so far. I was in the driver seat as we began this part of the drive, but I had to pull over, I was just too nervous!! I didn't really want to be in the passenger side either as that was closer to the cliff!! Yikes. I have to admit when we finally got off the coastal cliffs and into the inland area I was much happier! We stopped at San Simeon for the night.

Miles upon miles of plastic covered veggie fields

Not sure but probably Parsnips

Approximately 17,000 curves in 60 miles....2 hours....1 very tense passenger.
