Florence to Brookings, Oregon

It is taking us a long time to get through Oregon. There is something to see around every turn, and there are MANY turns!! Today it took us about 2 hours to travel 10 miles.

First we stopped to see the dunes at various places along the Oregon Trail. Huge sand dunes block the view to the ocean with lakes inland. The wind sure whistles through the dunes!! One area of dunes we stopped at looked to be a wonderful place to play on with off road vehicles. Tracks everywhere showed the ORV went through water as well as sand. It would be a blast!

Shortly past the dunes stop we pulled over to the east side on a logging road to where there were large tracks of forest cut down. Gave us an appreciation for the elevation changes in the area.

We drove on to Umpqua lighthouse. There we took the lighthouse loop. There was a great whale watching viewpoint and In January there is up to 30 whales an hour passing that area, but we didn't see any. Walked around the tiny Lake Marie at the same area. Then went back to the town of Winchester Bay, to Griffs for clam chowder and a fish soup, called cioppino. It was full of 5 kinds of seafood in a tomato broth...fabulous.

Fortified we drove further south down the coast to Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. The course looked gloriously green to our Canadian eyes and the clubhouse was gorgeous Don didn't golf, the day was cool and rainy, but I know he wanted to.

To pacify me, we stopped at Wild River Wool Factory in Langlois. All yarns are hand carded, dyed and spun from local wools. They give spinning and felting classes. Perhaps we will have to come back to this area so Don can play all the courses at Bandon Dunes and I can learn to spin and felt wool. ;)

From then on we really tried to put on some miles, but around every curve there seemed to be a view point. In the boggy areas we saw cranberries being cultivated (right now the leaves on the low growing shrubs look reddish). We viewed Battle Rocks, Whale Head Rock, Arch Rock and many other rocky out croppings. This shore is extremely rugged!! Well worth the drive.
