A day of travel from Mesa to Page Arizona, took a while as we had to ooh and ahh over all the sites. We drove north thru Sedona and Flagstaff. The #89 Hwy between Gap and Page had a landslide and will not be repaired for over a year so we had to take an alternate route.
Sedona is magnificent with red rock mesas and towering cliffs. Entering into the area was interesting. The red rock seems to just appear out of nowhere!
Past Sedona we stopped at Rock Slide National Park to eat a picnic lunch. The area was the first apple plantation and is now a park. An impressive groove in the sandstone has been eroded by water creating a water slide. A FEW people were in the water; it was quite cold. A fun place to be on a hot summer day!!
On we traveled on the scenic highway with many switchbacks. At one scenic outlook we could see the highway we had travelled on. Amazing scenery.
Finally we entered the town of Page. It is a mining town and is the centre of tourism for the Lake Powell Recreation Area. Lake Powell was created by the damning up of the Colorado River for generating electricity and providing water for towns downstream.
We stopped at a Tourist Info Centre for maps and info on tomorrows hike and then checked into the Quality Inn where we are staying. Took a drive and then had supper at an Authentic Mexican food restaurant. Piles of food!! Carb load for tomorrow's hike?!
