St Patrick's Country Tour

The hill of Down where Down Cathedral is located has been a place of Christian prayer and worship since the time of St Patrick since 500AD. St Patrick is buried here. Little is known of what the area looked like from the death of St Patrick until the 11 century, when the Danish harassment ended and church was maintained by Augustnian monks. Then in 1188 the Anglo-Norman invasion the monks were banished and this area was then dedicated to St Patrick.

The Moon and sun were early Irish Symbols and were combined with the Catholic faith to produce the Celtic Cross seen in many of my photos. In the 1100s that cross and the Irish people are seen as pagan by invaders who felt they were bringing civilization to the area.
