Favorites - Modern

There are beginning to be more modern quilts at the shows. Here are some of my favourites from the AQS in Phoenix.

Just Passing Through in Plum and Periwinkle
by Nancy Scott
No, the colour really did not come through correctly.  
The background quilting was gorgeous; lots of feathers and some pebbles, etc.

Moons Over Bars
by Susan Gerrity
Again, gorgeous quilting in the negative spaces.  Lines and echoed circles. 
 Between the horizontal lines are strips of very small McTavishing.  Wow!!

Modern Mirage

Very geometric quilting in negative space.

Buckles and Belts
by Linda Hungerford
Amazing background quilting featuring - paisleys, wishbone and lines 
to continue the buckles and belts in the negative space.

Upland
by Dianne Firth from Australia
Upland was inspired by the way water, captured in dams above the coastal plain, takes on the 
colors of the earth as fine particles of clay hang in suspension in the water.

Cycles 2
by Leanne Chahley from Edmonton, Alberta
The colours reflect sun-bleached sand, sky, and the ocean at the beach, while the modern, 
industrial, matchstick quilting evokes the weathered driftwood and rock textures.


Quilteenies 3: Going Ape

This quilt plays with negative and positive space.  
Each shape is individually quilted and attached to a hand-painted border.

Curves of Color

This asymmetrical, intersecting, improvisational quilt features pieced curves with gray as the neutral.  
It was raw-edge appliqued and quilted using repeating double line quilting curves.


Lotsa Gray - Bit O'Orange

The quilting in the gray repeats a few squares and lots of feathers.

Lily Pad

I'm sorry the detail is not evident from this picture.  Lots of detailed quilting and threadplay.  Awesome!

A Walk Around the Block

This quilt shows the quilters fascination for tumbling blocks.  She says the border was very challenging.  

Spinner
by Marlene Oddie
Traditional blocks at the end of the wind-turbine blade give a new twist to traditional patterns.
The quilting in the gray area creates a wind effect.
