Here are some of my favourite Art Quilts!!
Winterberries
by Thelma Bearden
The red berries are painted with a thickened dye.
The winter environment is reflected in the background white and gray.
Detail of the quilting.
Cactus Fireworks
by Vicki Bohnhoff
The Sonoran Desert's Argentine Giant is interpreted in raw-edge
applique using hand-dyed fabrics and silks.
The tactile experience and drama is heightened with beading.
La Lux
by Betty Busby
La Lux means the light in Spanish and is the name of a famous hiking trail in the Sandia Mountains in New Mexico. It begins at an elevation of 5000 feet and rises to 10000 feet.
Climate Change
by Gail Garber and Kristin Vierra
As Gail read and watched the ever changing, warming world and the effects on wildlife she felt compelled to make a statement with this quilt -
climate change is not always gradual, but can be sudden and extreme
The Spirit of Many Moons
by Sue Kluber
This quilt shows the moon n its phases and is amazing with beauty,
mystique and ability to affect everything.
Detail of stitching.
Savoring Twilight in Venice
by Patsy Kittredge
This quilt is all about the light as evening approaches.
Day gives way to night as Patsy's daughters enjoy a quiet moment in Venice.
Detail of light and dark material to create evening effect.
Sumac Sparkles
by Michele O'Neil Kincaid
This photo, taken at Acadia National Park, depicts the flashy colors of the sumac in the fall.
History at Tumacacori
by Barbara Janson
San Jose de Tumacacori Mission stands as a testament to the earliest influence of European culture on the indigemous people of Arizona.
Barbara created this landscape quilt to honor all those who have called the Pimeria Alta their home.
The piecework is exceptional and the painting over the piecework on the pottery is very effective!
Autocar
by Lynne Pillus
Lynne was inspired to create this quilt from a photo she took of a late 1930s Autocar truck with suicide doors which open backwards.
I love the range of colours she used in piecing this work!
Okanagan Sunrise
by Naomi Pearson from Vernon. BC
This quilt is based on a challenge to a theme on mountains, lakes and vineyards. Inspired by a view from her friend's vineyard, Naomi used her love of multimedia fabric art to make this quilt.
I like the organic border on this wall art quilt.
Persephone's Passion
by Diana Shore and Linda Bolhuis
This quilt was created by painting their version of the passion flowers that yield Persephone's generous bounty of passion fruit on a cotton background. Then quilting and adding three dimensional flowers. This quilt is very whimsical!
More than a Memory
by Kathy McNeil
Kathy dreamed about a tree whose memoris spanned several hundred years and had seen lovers and pioneers come and go. This quilt was hand appliqued, thread embellished and used ghost images.
You just have to see this up close to believe it!!
I thought the little girl was reading Little Red Riding Hood as I saw
an olden day girl with a basket and a wolf lurking in the ghost images.
Jerome
by Morgot McDonnell
Houses with character, as this one in the old mining town of Jerome,
challenged Margot to recreate it with fabric, embroidery and paint.
One of the many quilts on the Route 66 theme.
Great piecing and quilting detail in the wood, rock and old car.
Think I saw this one last year at Road to California quilt show?!?!
Woman with Two Gents
by Leslie Gabrielse from Rotterdam, Netherlands
The interaction between the woman and the men is obvious. The sun becomes her halo. She has a string of flowers around her. The setting of plants, beach and sailboat make it all complete.
I love the amazing colours and images this quilt captures!
(Do I see a young woman's legs in a short skirt walking on the right?)
Detail of stitching on face.
Mickey Blue Eyes
by Julie Wood
This quilt is entirely done in small hexagons to create the image of a close up dog's face.
Well done!
Wandering Round My World
by Beth Schillig
This original piece features turned edge machine applique, enhanced with decorative machine stitches. Primarily hand-dyed fabrics, lots of freehand machine quilting, and hand beading adorn this quilt.
This was my ultimate favorite! I like the idea of the three panels attached by the 'worlds' and the quilting connecting them all. An organic design using rectangles and circles as the two primary shapes.
