Dad went in to have an aorta aneurism repair surgery. Mom, Dad and I drove in to Winnipeg and stayed at a hotel nearby the hospital the night before the surgery as Dad had to be there for 6:15 am.
We arrived at the hospital in the early morning darkness, got Dad registered and into the pre-operation room. Once the medical staff got him hooked up to monitors they noticed that his oxygen levels were very low. They checked his lungs by x-ray, couldn't really see any major concerns, but decided to switch to a general anesthetic instead of the epidural. (With the general they can control oxygen levels better.)
After the delay, Dad went into surgery at about 9am. By 3 pm the surgery was finally finished, and Dad's surgeon came to talk to Mom and I. He explained that the aorta aneurism repair was very tricky because the bulge was high up on the aorta, right where the arteries lead to the kidneys. The graft for the aneurism was made specifically for Dad and placement was time consuming as it had to be positioned around the renal arteries.
Dad is exceptional (Didn't we all know that!) because he has two arteries going to his right kidney (most people only have one). One of the arteries was narrowing, so they put in a stent.
We visited with Dad after the surgery in the area they call step down. He gets very good care there. Two nurses for four patients and constant surveillance. Dad says he is in very little pain, but he isn't hungry and hasn't eaten yet. He has been up walking. Perhaps he will eat soon and move to the regular ward tomorrow.

Art Auction Quilt
My local quilt guild, JR&FQ2, are making a Day and Night Quilt for the Tiger Hills Arts Association Art Auction on November 14. I quilted it on the long arm. I think it looks good (even if I do say so myself).
Security Blanket Provider Quilting
The TCI girls have been quilting up a storm. Three donation quilts cut and ready to sew up. One quilt top already put together. Way to go!!
Appointment at St B
I drove to Winnipeg with Mom and Dad to attend Dad's pre-op surgery appointment. West with the anesthesiologist who explained the steps of the surgery and did a check up on Dad. Everything is set to go.
We went to Aaron's new apartment for supper. Yummy homemade guacamole made by Rhayne. For supper we had veggie lasagna, salad, garlic bread and pumpkin pie for dessert. Delicious!!

Ballet
A few of the members of 2000 Splendid Books Book club invited their daughters/ granddaughters to attend the ballet in Winnipeg. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet was premiering their version of Margaret Atwoods book The Handmaids Tale.
Most of us had read the book and felt the ballet did a great representation of the story. As the setting of this sober tale is a dystopia, the theme was a bit difficult to portray in graceful ballet moves and some of the music was very dissonant. However, there were a few moments that were exceptional - Offred and Moira, Nick and Offred, and the hopeful ending - where Offred used ropes to suspend herself throughout her ballet moves. Beautiful! We all enjoyed the performance!

Prairie Wind FLEECERS Meet
The first meeting and forming of a new guild took place at Cypress River. The Prairie Wind FLEECERs (Fibre Lovers Enthusiastically Engaging in Creating Essentials Regularly). Quite a handle!! The group will meet the second Saturday of the month at the Cypress River Resource Centre (the former school). There the group will share in the enjoyment and knowledge of fibre, from shearing, washing, carding, spinning, felting, knitting, weaving, etc of various natural fibres. Should be fun! Everyone is welcome!!
The ever enthusiastic Lisa, "Fleecer Lisa" our leader!
Carding on her antique drum carder.
Georgette spinning on the wheel her grandfather made.
Knitting is another option.
Beautiful felted mitts!!

Then borders and quilting and it will be ready to be bid on! I hope people realize the value of this quilt and will bid accordingly!!

MPQ - Modern Quilts
This months Manitoba Prairie Quilters meeting was focused on modern quilting. Marj and Sandy gave a presentation on the definition of a modern quilt followed by some samples.
Modern quilts are hard to define, but most people agree that modern quilts:
Use modern fabrics
Use a lot of solid fabrics
Make great use of negative space to show off quilting lines
Sometimes use traditional blocks, but often fracture or change them
Use the left over fabric from piecing to make a funking backing
Here are some photos of samples to help explain the modern quilt.

The centre of the blocks are made from scraps!
The back is interesting too!
Modern fabrics and wonky lines.
Marj and Sandy, the presenters, are looking at the quilts in amazement too!
Modern blocks are often made of solids and have a lot of negative space that is highly quilted.
Another funky back!
These bright solids are hand dyed material!
Modern fabrics with a grey border, common in modern quilts.
Hexagons are not new, but this enormous size is!
Fractured blocks are modern interpretations of traditional blocks.
Modern Dresden plate.
Modern fabric teamed with lots of grey negative space to show off the quilting lines.
Use of precut fabric (jelly rolls) teamed with negative space in the green borders,
where you can see the gorgeous geometric quilting lines.
Winnipeg Grandchildren
While in Winnipeg I visited three grandchildren of my friends'. Yvonne and Bill have three grandchildren, my great niece and nephews. I visited Greg and Jen's kids. Sofia is a little chatterbox who loves to dance. Jonah is a big eyed sweetie who loves to watch his big sister.
John and Shirley have two grandchildren in Winnipeg. They were in babysitting Ruby, who made shy when we stopped by.

Winnipeg days
In Winnipeg for a few days. Uncle Marvin had his aneurism graft surgery. All went well. He will be in hospital for a few days yet.
Visited with Leah. We went to see Margaret Atwood speak at McNally Robinson Booksellers. She was interviewed by Terry McLeod from CBC Weekend Morning Radio. Terry is a wonderful interviewer and Margaret was very interesting and has a dry wit. A very enjoyable event.
Afterwards Leah and I went to Aaron's for a visit. He has a wonderful view from his apartment's many windows. His cat, Baby, loves to look out the window.

Downtown Calgary
Early morning walk and breakfast in downtown Calgary. Walked to Chinatown and had breakfast at a HongKong Style Restaurant. Had hot tea in a tall water glass. Don ate sea food and noodles, and I had eggs. They sell cooked ducks, chicken, pork, etc. from a glass roaster that you could see into.
The view of downtown Calgary skyline has changed. The Calgary tower seems outdated and dwarfed by the towering skyscrapers surrounding it.
We walked along the Bow River after breakfast. It was a cool fall day. Don took some panorama shots with me in them. One facing the river, one facing downtown (our hotel is behind me to the left) and among some Karl Forester grass (just for you Joan).
