Maud Lewis

Maud was born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia on March 7, 1903. Her father was a successful harness maker and her mother loved to paint and play the piano. Maud developed juvenile arthritis as a young child.

Maid married Everett Lewis, a local fishmonger and moved into his tiny house. It was here she spent her life enlivening the walls, doors, stairs and household objects with her colourful images of birds, flowers and butterflies. Today Maud is recognized as one of Canada's most important folk artists. Her entire house and various art works are on display in the Art Gallery of Nove Scotia.
