Heard Museum

The Heard Museum in downtown Phoenix features the arts and culture of Native People's of the Americas. The museum features traveling exhibits as well as ongoing exhibits.

One traveling exhibit features the works of Navajo artist, Charles Lolomas, who was a painter and then focused on outstanding jewelry. It was interesting to see the sketches he used to design some if his pieces.

The ongoing exhibit that we enjoyed the most is called, Home:  Native People in the Southwest. Exquisite displays focus on the homes of the tribes in the Southwest region, including:  the Pueblo past; the Rio Grande; the Mesas; Plateau country; the Central Mountains; the Colorado River Valley; and the Sonoran Desert. Beautiful woven baskets and clothes, along with stunning jewelry from the past to the present were displayed.

This museum also houses an amazing store that sells work from Native Artists. The woven rugs were gorgeous and each rug had the picture of the artist attached to it. All the jewelry was displayed with the artists name on it. Wonderful way to promote original art work.
