Silversmithing Part 1

Joyce invited me to her park to take a beginner course in Silversmithing. In the morning of the first day we learned how to build our own ring using silver pieces and soldering them together.

To begin we each chose a stone to our liking. Joyce chose a purple stone (Trevor's favourite colour) and I chose a stone that looked like a landscape scene mottled in it.

We used the size of the stone to create the size of the bezel which holds the stone. The bezel is welded to a piece of flat silver metal on which we stamped the word 'sterling', to prove that it was sterling silver.

We formed the band to our correct ring size and welded it to our metal stone holder top. Polished the ring with various electric sanders. Lastly we inserted the stone.

It was fun and we learned a lot!

The various pieces used to build the silver part of the ring.

After each bit of welding, the silver had to be cleaned in a "pickle" jar.
The pickle jar is actually an acid kept warm in a crock pot.

Here is my silver ring with landscape looking stone.  (Middle finger)
