Tuesday in Halifax

When I woke up Tuesday morning in the Westin Nova Scotian and looked out the window I saw a navy ship sail by. Was I dreaming? Not a sight a prairie girl often sees!

I met up with a couple of other women, Linda and Kristina, and we decided to walk along the Harbourfront. Halifax has a wonderful boardwalk, apartments, lots of restaurants, tourist gift shops and small food stalls along the harbour front walk within minutes of the hotel.

We toured the Marine Museum. Replica shipbuilders are working on small scaled ships as you walk in the door. There is a parrot and a lighthouse glass also near the door. The main exhibits focus on local and navy ships. Another great exhibit is the largest display of Titanic memorabilia anywhere. Halifax was the closest seaport with train access to the location of the Titanic disaster and became the morgue and major burial ground for the many victims of the sinking.

After visiting the museum we walked by the citadel, located at the top of the hill in Halifax, saw the town clock and many row houses. We stopped to shop at Hilltribe, a clothing store selling clothes designed in Canada and produced in Bali.

We continued to walk for many miles. Mostly all uphill! Arrived and shopped at Hydrostone Market, a street of stone buildings all connected, that house unique shops and restaurants. I bought some locally spun and dyed yarn from a Nova Scotian Fibre artist. We caught a cab back to the hotel.

Supper had us, three Manitoba couples, eating at Carlton where we also lucked into entertainment. Norma MacDonald (Also my grandmothers name!) a singer songwriter sang her own melodic ballads. Very sad melodies with humorous stories setting up the songs. (Similar to Jann Arden.) Very talented musician.

To end the evening we walked along the harbour and stopped in at Cows. Ever been to Cows? If you have no doubt your taste buds are tingling. The creamiest ice cream imaginable! I had Messie Bessie, dark chocolate ice cream with toffee and chocolate chunks. Yummy!!
